Coventry Community Update July 2025
Coventry Fireworks June 28

TOWN MANAGER'S MESSAGE:

Half the year is behind us and it is hard to believe it is summer again.   I have seen kayaks on Eagleville Lake.  Patriots Park and Lisicke Beaches are full of swimmers and several boats are out on Coventry Lake.  There will be lots of fun to be had on and around the water.  The Town of Coventry is proud to kick off July with an early Independence Day celebration in Patriots Park with fireworks on June 28th over Coventry Lake. The evening will begin at 6:00 PM with several Food trucks and musical entertainment.  Fireworks begin around 9:00 PM just after dark.  There will be parking at Patriots Park and at the George H. Robertson School for spectators to walk into the Park.  A shuttle bus is being provided for those that park at Coventry High School/Captain Nathan Hale Middle School. We hope you can come out and join us. We thank all the residents and businesses that came forward with generous donations to make this event happen. If we are rained out on Saturday night, the following night (Sunday) will be our rain date.

During this summer the Town will once again be working with our consultants to combat the spread of hydrilla in Coventry Lake   Since 2015 the Town has worked with the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), and consultants to combat the growth of hydrilla. Hydrilla is an invasive aquatic plant, that was not originally within the lake until it was spotted 10 years ago. It may have been brought in from elsewhere accidently by boat owners. The Town has been active in working with aquatic plant experts in treating the lake to attempt to eradicate the plant. Survey work has been frequently done on the lake by Northeast Aquatic Research (NEAR) to locate invasive plants. Last year, NEAR recommended treatment of the entire Lake with Fluoridone at an annual cost of $119,750 each per year for three years. We completed year one last summer and are in position to treat the lake again this summer. As this is very costly, it is wonderful that the Town has again this year received a grant from the State for Aquatic Invasive Species Control on Lakes, Ponds, and Rivers in the amount of $75,000.   This money along with designated reserves, and funds allocated in the recently passed Town Budget will allow us to provide the needed treatments over summer 2025.  Additionally, the Town is again this summer partnering with the Town of Mansfield to combat the invasive plant known as fanwort in Eagleville Lake.  Like hydrilla, fanwort can clog waterways, impact fishing and diminish recreational use of the lake.  These projects are important for water quality and the health of wildlife in and around the lakes.  Our lakes are an important resource for our community that we all have come to appreciate, rely on and to enjoy.

Summer is construction season.   Some construction projects, such as Town road paving, though scaled back to budget cuts,  will continue forward and there are some new construction projects that are soon to start.    We will continue our School Street drainage project; and later this summer we will begin construction on our Main Street sidewalk extension project (Hemlock to Winterberry).  Additionally we are preparing for late summer/fall construction projects such as the Plains Road Water line extension; Main Street/Cross Street flashing crosswalks; and the park improvements to Patriots’ Park.  Many of these capital projects are primarily funded with State and/or Federal grants, with some requiring a match or  that the Town fund the engineering.   Several other grant projects (primarily road and bridge replacement projects) are currently in engineering and will be lined up for a busy summer 2026 construction season.

Have a great July and enjoy the warm weather and remember to stay hydrated.    I hope to see you all around Town this month,  I’ll be at the Farmers Market, or maybe cooling off at the beach at Patriots Park.  Should you wish to contact me, please email JDrumm@coventry-ct.gov or call the office at 860-742-6324. Frequent updates are also posted to the Town Manager’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CoventryCTTownManager.

Sincerely,

James Drumm
