Coventry Community Update July 2024
July is Lake Awareness Month

TOWN MANAGER'S MESSAGE:

I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine and the warm days of summer.  In summer we seem to focus more on the rivers and the lakes in our Town.  I have seen kayaks on Eagleville Lake.  Patriots Park and Lisicke Beaches are full of swimmers and several boats are out on Coventry Lake.  There will be lots of fun to be had on and around the water. After several years of not having fireworks, the Town of Coventry is proud to kick off July with an early Independence Day celebration in Patriots Park with fireworks on June 29th over Coventry Lake. The evening will begin at 6:00 PM with several food trucks and musical entertainment.  Fireworks begin after dark.  There will be parking at Patriots Park and at the George H. Robertson School.  A shuttle bus is being provided for those that park at Coventry High School. We hope you can come out and join us. We thank all the residents and businesses that came forward with generous donations to make the event happen.

During summer the Town will be working with our consultants to combat the spread of hydrilla in Coventry Lake   Since 2015 the Town has worked with the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), and consultants to combat the growth of hydrilla.  Hydrilla is an invasive aquatic plant, that was not originally within the lake until it was spotted 9 years ago.  The Town has been active in working with aquatic plant experts in treating the lake to attempt to eradicate the plant. Survey work has been frequently done on the lake by Northeast Aquatic Research (NEAR) to locate invasive plants. NEAR is recommending treatment of the entire Lake with Fluoridone at an annual cost of $119,750 each per year for the next three years.  As this is very costly, it is wonderful that the Town has recently received a grant from the State for Aquatic Invasive Species Control on Lakes, Ponds, and Rivers in the amount of $75,000.   This money and funds in the recently passed Town Budget will allow us to provide the needed treatments over summer 2024.   Additionally, the Town is partnering with the Town of Mansfield to combat the invasive plant known as fanwort in Eagleville Lake.  Like hydrilla, fanwort can clog waterways, impact fishing and diminish recreational use of the lake.  These projects are important for water quality and the health of wildlife in and around the lakes.  Our lakes are an important resource for our community that we all have come to appreciate, rely on and to enjoy.

Summer is construction season.   Some construction projects, like the Hop River Bridge, and Town road paving will continue forward, and some new construction projects are soon to start.  At Miller-Ricardson Park we will soon see the dust flying as a new road and a new ADA friendly (American with Disabilities Act) sidewalk system will be constructed. This will provide handicap parking and a large lighted pedestrian area for children to travel between fields from the parking area without having to cross roadways. This will really improve the function, the safety and the look of the park and the parking areas.  These improvements are part of phase one of the new Miller-Richardson Park Master Plan. The project is funded primarily by a $500,000 State grant with some supplemental funding provided by the Town. The project should be done by autumn.  We expect to use the Master Plan’s multiple phases to apply for grants in the future for further improvements which include basketball courts, pickleball courts and a playground among other things.

Have a great July and enjoy the weather.   I hope to see you all around Town this month. I’ll be at the Farmers’ Market, or maybe checking out the antique shops in the Village.  Should you wish to contact me, please email JDrumm@coventry-ct.gov or call the office at 860-742-6324. Frequent updates are also posted to the Town Manager’s Facebook page.

Sincerely,

James Drumm
